Keep the two tax systems separate
GST and PST have different purchase and exemption rules. Eligible GST input tax credits are reviewed from supporting documents; PST paid does not become a GST credit. Materials, resale stock, software and equipment can require different treatment even when purchased from the same vendor.
The sales review considers the product or service and relevant destination. A Burnaby office does not determine every supply’s tax rate. Unusual transactions and mixed-use purchases belong on a documented exceptions list.
Preserve dates for affected services
B.C.’s October 1, 2026 expansion includes taxable bookkeeping services. The transition depends on consideration paid or due and the service period, with exemptions and other conditions considered. Keeping those details makes it possible to review a bill without assuming its printed date settles the answer.
Illustrative example: parts and office equipment
A Burnaby manufacturer buys components used in production and a computer used by administration. The records identify each item’s purpose and any applicable exemption evidence. A supplier-wide tax code would conceal the distinction and could produce an unsupported purchase treatment.
Questions about this work
Can manufacturing equipment qualify for an exemption?
Specific B.C. rules may apply, with conditions and documentation. We gather the evidence rather than assume all machinery is exempt.
Do you submit the returns?
Filing and payment responsibility are confirmed in the engagement. A reconciled tax account does not itself prove a return was filed.
